Liam Lubiano, a seven year old Grade 2 boy at Notre Dame Catholic Elementary School in Niagara Falls participated in the Ontario English Catholic Teacher Association Young Authors Awards and his French poem about Santa Claus won at the local level. Liam’s French poem advanced to the provincial level and he won the provincial Ontario English Catholic Teacher Association Young Authors Awards in the Grades 1-2 French Poem category. Over 310 entries from local OECTA Units were submitted to the provincial level of the Young Authors Awards contest, 52 of these were French. 17 local OECTA Units had winners at the provincial level this year.
Liam wrote his poem in December 2020 when he was in Grade 1 and it was submitted to the awards by his French teacher Maria De Benedetti.
Liam wrote a five line French cinquain poem.
“Le père Noël
beau et joli
marche, court, vole
Le Père Noël court.
Students each wrote poems after “brainstorming all the nouns, verbs and adjectives” related to the theme. De Benedetti submitted four poems, believing they had a chance to win based on criteria such as grammar, originality, neatness, accuracy and art.
Liam was the youngest winner at the provincial level and the only winner in the Niagara Catholic District School Board. This is a great honour for the student, for the school and the board. This is the sixth time that a student of Maria De Benedetti has won at the provincial level and a consecutive win at Notre Dame Catholic Elementary School. Liam received his plaque, his certificate as well as a book with his poem and other winning submissions.
