St. Alfred Catholic Elementary School Receives Prestigious Michael Monk Award

Congratulations to the staff and students at St. Alfred Catholic Elementary School in St. Catharines. The school recently received the 2022 Michael Monk Award from the Catholic Education Foundation of Ontario for their project, Students Serving Others, which supports people in need through Out of the Cold at St. Alfred Parish.

The Award celebrates a “new initiative in a Catholic school in the province that seeks to support students in need – either economically or socially – while also improving student engagement and learning.”

The Michael Monk Award comes with $4,000 in funding, which will be used to buy ingredients to make sandwiches for Out of the Cold throughout the winter.

Students Serving Others began earlier this month, led by teachers Rosa DiFruscia-Warner (Educational Resource Teacher), Stella Wheeler-Bigford (Grade 7/8) and Melissa Maney-Worden (Grade 1). Students in Grades K – 8 will take turns making sandwiches once per week for Out of the Cold to distribute.

We are tremendously proud of the school community at St. Alfred for receiving this very prestigious honour.

The Michael Monk Award comes with a $4,000 cash prize, which St. Alfred Principal Rian Bishop says will be used to buy ingredients to continue to make sandwiches throughout the winter.

We are tremendously proud of the school community at St. Alfred for receiving this very prestigious honour.
