Director of Education’s Inspiration Award 2020
Mark Castellani - Teacher
“It’s hard to be other-centered in a me-first world”
I share this quote on the first day of every semester in all of my classes and use it as a touchtone to remind students regularly of their place in the world. I refer to it often throughout the year as a reminder that it takes work, effort and real sacrifice to step outside ourselves and really focus on the needs of other people … especially the ones that we love the most.
I am truly humbled to have been nominated for the Director's Inspiration Award. I honestly feel quite undeserving. I think of myself as someone who tries his best each day to help people in simple ways. I encourage others to become a "better version of themselves" while at the same time stumbling and struggling to become a better version of myself. I take my vocation as a Catholic teacher and a Catholic Christian very seriously and it is by making many mistakes that I've learned how I can best share my gifts and talents within Niagara Catholic to impact people’s faith lives in a positive way. But to be recognized for it is more than a little overwhelming for me.
To all of the people that I’ve worked with over the years I want to say a sincere thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thanks for your patience with me. Thank you for giving me opportunities to try, fail and then succeed. And thank you for allowing me to be myself in the process. I am truly blessed to be a part of such a wonderful school family. Know that I'll continue to pray for you and for all of our Niagara Catholic community.

I don’t have the words to express my appreciation on being a recipient of the 2020 Inspiration Award. I am truly overwhelmed and humbled. My parents were my role models. They instilled in me that each one of us is truly the eyes, ears, mouth and hands of our dear Lord Jesus Christ. We are here to do his work and see the face of God in each person we meet. I try to instill this in my students who I have the honour and privilege to teach. I sincerely thank Niagara Catholic district School Board for this award.
Thank you for this distinguished award and congratulations to my colleagues for their hard work and dedication to Catholic education. It is an honour to be nominated and to be one of the recipients of the Inspiration Award 2020.

Thank you so much to Niagara Catholic for honouring me with the Inspiration Award. I am motivated daily by the passion and support of all the educators and staff in our board to work together, enhancing student learning with technology.
I am grateful for being selected as one of this year’s Inspiration Award recipients. It is a testament to the amazing staff I am blessed to work with each day. Their dedication to our community allows me the opportunity to work collaboratively with them to bring out the best in all of us. They inspire me to be the best servant leader I can be.
