OECTA, Province Reach Tentative Central Agreement

The Niagara Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce that after months of central bargaining, a tentative collective agreement was reached between the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association and the Province.

The terms of the tentative central collective agreement will remain confidential until both parties hold a ratification vote.

With the announcement of a tentative central collective agreement, programs, supports and services provided by our excellent teaching staff will resume, effective immediately.

We look forward to having elementary teachers and all students return to classes tomorrow - and again in April, when all Ontario schools reopen following the COVID-19 closure.

OECTA Announces Province-Wide, One-Day Walkout for Thursday, March 5

This is a reminder to all students, parents and guardians of the one-day provincial job action on Thursday, March 5, by our teachers who are members of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA). All Niagara Catholic elementary, secondary, and continuing education schools, and all alternative education programs will be closed to students for the day. A full list of affected programs and services is listed under the February 27 update below. Parents are advised to make alternative plans for the care of children on Thursday, March 5, if necessary. All schools will reopen to students, and programs and transportation will resume on Friday, March 6.

OECTA Announces Province-Wide, One-Day Walkout for Thursday, March 5

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA), which represents Catholic elementary and secondary teachers in the Province of Ontario, including Niagara Catholic, announced a one-day, province-wide walkout on Thursday, March 5, 2020.

For the health and safety of our students, all Niagara Catholic elementary, secondary, continuing education schools and all alternative education programs will be closed to students on Thursday, March 5. Parents/guardians are advised to make alternative plans for the care of children on Thursday, March 5. All schools will reopen to students on Friday, March 6.

For Thursday, March 5:

  • All schools will be closed to students
  • Non-striking staff will report to work as usual
  • Parents/guardians will not be required to call in absences
  • Niagara Student Transportation Services (NSTS) bus transportation will be cancelled
  • All athletic, co-instructional, cooperative education and dual credit placements will be cancelled
  • All Continuing Education credit classes will be cancelled. Non-credit programs will continue
  • EarlyOn Centres will be open
  • Families currently receiving child care services in our schools are asked to contact your current provider
  • Catholic School Council Meetings and school events will be rescheduled as determined by the school Principal

OECTA Agrees to Suspend Rotating Strikes for Week of February 24 - Niagara Catholic Schools Will Be Open Monday

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association, which represents Catholic elementary and secondary teachers in Ontario, including Niagara Catholic, has announced it will suspend its week-long rotating strikes, scheduled to begin on Monday, February 24, 2020, and will return to the central bargaining table.

With this notice, we are informing all students and families that all Niagara Catholic schools are open to students on Monday, February 24th with all classes in session and transportation provided as normal.

OECTA Will Hold Rotating Strikes Week of February 24

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association, which represents Catholic elementary and secondary teachers in Ontario, including Niagara Catholic, has announced it will begin a series of rotating full withdrawals of services on Monday, February 24, 2020, if an agreement is not reached during scheduled negotiations with the provincial government and Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association on February 19.

The imposition of sanctions is a legal part of the collective bargaining process. These rotating full withdrawals of services are in addition to the February 21 province-wide walkout, and the administrative job actions that began on January 13.

For the health and safety of our students, all Niagara Catholic elementary and secondary schools will be closed to students on Monday, February 24. Parents/guardians are advised to make alternative plans for the care of their children on Monday, February 24. All Niagara Catholic schools will reopen to students on Tuesday, February 25.

For Friday, February 21 and Monday, February 24:

  • All schools will be closed to students
  • Non-striking staff will report to work as usual
  • Parents/guardians will not be required to report absences
  • Niagara Student Transportation Services (NSTS) bus transportation will be cancelled
  • All athletic, co-instructional, cooperative education and dual-credit placements will be cancelled
  • All Continuing Education credit classes will be cancelled. Non-credit programs will continue
  • EarlyON Centres will be open
  • Families currently receiving child care services in our schools are asked to contact your current provider
  • Catholic School Council Meetings and school events will be rescheduled as determined by the Principal

OECTA Will Join Three Other Teachers' Unions in Province-wide Walkout February 21

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA), which represents Catholic elementary and secondary teachers in the Province of Ontario, including Niagara Catholic, will join all teachers’ unions in Ontario in a province-wide, one-day withdrawal of services on Friday, February 21st, 2020.

For the health and safety of our students, all Niagara Catholic elementary, secondary, continuing education schools and all alternative education programs will be closed to students on Friday, February 21, 2020. Parents/guardians are advised to make alternative plans for the care of children on Friday, February 21. All schools will reopen to students on Monday, February 24.

For Friday, February 21:

  • All schools will be closed to students
  • Non-striking staff will report to work as usual
  • Parents/guardians will not be required to call in absences
  • Niagara Student Transportation Services (NSTS) bus transportation will be cancelled

OECTA Enhanced Administrative Job Action in Progress

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA), which represents Catholic elementary and secondary school teachers in Ontario, including Niagara Catholic, is in a legal strike position in its dispute with the provincial government, and is legally able to withhold or withdraw labour.

Last week, OECTA announced plans to enhance its administrative job action, in an effort to draw attention to the current labour dispute. This enhanced withdrawal of services began yesterday. The additional OECTA sanctions are available here.

Niagara Catholic is committed to providing all students with a broad educational experience, with the health and safety of our students and staff a top priority. The enhanced job action may affect scheduled events, field trips and co-instructional activities planned for Niagara Catholic students. Together with our school Principals, we will continue to monitor the enhanced job action and, if necessary, will either postpone, reschedule or cancel events or activities if a decision is made that we cannot provide adequate student supervision.

OECTA Announces Enhanced Administrative Job Action

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA), which represents Catholic elementary and secondary teachers in Ontario, including Niagara Catholic, has announced that it will enhance its administrative job action beginning Tuesday, February 11.

In a release issued to the media and published on the OECTA provincial website, the union stated OECTA members will only perform scheduled teaching and supervision duties during regular school days, and will not perform any additional tasks or assignments. Any parent-teacher interviews scheduled to take place will continue as scheduled, and teachers will continue to participate in extracurricular activities. The full media release is available here.

Reminder to All Niagara Catholic Families Regarding the February 4 One-Day, Province-wide Strike by OECTA

This is a reminder for all students, parents and guardians of the one-day provincial job action on Tuesday, February 4, by our teachers who are members of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA). All Niagara Catholic elementary, secondary and continuing education schools, and all alternative education programs will be closed to students for the day. A list of affected programs and services is listed below. Parents are advised to make alternative childcare arrangements as necessary for Tuesday. All schools will reopen to students, and all programs and transportation will resume, on Wednesday, February 5.

OECTA is negotiating with the province today. If an agreement is reached, and the one-day walkout is cancelled, we will notify parents by phone or email, text, social media and our Board website either late Monday night or very early Tuesday morning that our schools will be open. We will ONLY send a message if schools are open on Tuesday, If you do not receive a message, or see an update on the Board website advising schools are open, please do not take your child to school on Tuesday, as they will be closed to students.

Notice to All Students, Parents and Guardians Regarding OECTA's One-Day Planned Full Withdrawal of Services January 21, 2020

Niagara Catholic has advised families of a planned one-day full withdrawal of services of services by members of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA) in all Ontario Catholic elementary and secondary schools on January 21st, 2020, if a provincial agreement is not reached.

Niagara Catholic has approximately 1,704 full-time and occasional teachers represented by OECTA in our elementary, secondary and continuing education schools, alternative education programs and the Catholic Education Centre. We value the important work they do in our schools and sites every day.

In addition to this notice, all families will receive email correspondence from the Board through our School Messenger program, advising of what to expect in the event of a full withdrawal of services on January 21st:

  • All elementary, secondary and continuing education schools will be closed to students for the health and safety of students.
  • Non-striking staff will report to work as usual.
  • Parents/guardians will not be required to call in absences.
  • Niagara Student Transportation Services (NSTS) bus service will be cancelled.
  • All athletic, co-instruction cooperative education and dual-credit placements will be cancelled.
  • Continuing Education credit classes will be cancelled. Non-credit programs will continue.
  • Catholic School Council meetings and school events will be rescheduled as determined by the school principal.
  • EarlyOn Centres will be open.

All families should have a plan in place for childcare on January 21st.  Families that use childcare services in our schools should speak directly with their childcare provider for any impact the one-day work stoppage may have on childcare services.

OECTA Announces One-Day Province-Wide Strike Action – January 21, 2020

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA), which represents Catholic elementary and secondary teachers in the Province of Ontario, including Niagara Catholic, announced a one-day, province-wide withdrawal of services on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, if no agreement is reached. If there is a full withdrawal of services by our elementary and secondary teachers, for the health and safety of our students, all Niagara Catholic schools will be closed for students on Tuesday, January 21, 2020. Parents/guardians are advised to review alternative plans should schools be closed for students on January 21, 2020.

We will continue to provide current information on this site, through our social media channels and directly with families through our School Messenger communication system as required.

EQAO Grade 9 Mathematics Assessment – January 2020

Parents/guardians and students currently enrolled in Grade 9 Mathematics – Academic or Applied in Semester One are in the process of being informed that due to the current job action by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA), the scheduled EQAO Grade 9 Mathematics assessment will not be administered this January 2020.

Boards have been informed that OECTA secondary teachers will not participate in EQAO-related activities, including preparation, administering and subsequent marking of the test.

On January 8th, the Minister of Education informed Boards that EQAO not administered in January will be administered in June 2020. As additional information is provided by the Ministry of Education, we will communicate this to students and parents/guardians.

OECTA Announces Administrative Job Action

The Ontario English-Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA), which represents Catholic elementary and secondary teachers in the Province of Ontario including Niagara Catholic, has announced that it will begin an administrative job action on Monday, January 13, 2020.

We respect the collective bargaining process and hope that a resolution will be reached. We expect that this administrative job action will have a minimal effect on classroom learning.

Niagara Catholic schools will continue to be open with learning in session within our safe and inclusive environment.

All Catholic Boards in Ontario have been informed by OECTA that beginning Monday, January 13, its members will not provide comments on report cards, or participate in EQAO-related or Ministry of Education-based activities during this job action. A complete list of services being withdrawn effective January 13, 2020 is available on the OECTA website.

As additional information becomes available, Niagara Catholic will continue to provide regular, timely updates to parents and guardians on this website, as well as through our School Messenger system, as required throughout this time.
